Hidden Treasure

No card catalogue or late fees
for this amicable neighborhood hang,
a community gem
with shhh ripped from its vocabulary;
opinions scribbled inside the back cover

appreciated by the indecisive
erased by the opposition,
like the first Lovely Bones assessment,
Disturbing it screamed.
Some viewed it a fair judgment

considering the painful subject,
but the second reader
who was not ninety years old
or misguided by the word Lovely
afforded Alice Sebold a fighting chance

and invited once forbidden
conversation
about prickly topics−
a welcomed departure
from nice weather we’re having.
